i hosted my first book club

a magical night of good food, books and company

i’ve had a dream of starting a book club for many a moon and last night, my dream became a reality.

after a few reschedules, my closest reader friends and i got together over dinner and a few bottles of wine and… (you guessed it) discussed books!

for the first edition of book club, i thought it would be a good idea to have a book exchange instead of jumping right into reading a book together. so, i organised for all of us to bring one of our favourite books (or just a book that we liked/could talk about).

and, if i do say so myself, it was a raging success. (yay!)

so, in between pouring glasses of wine and courses of our meal, we went around the table and each talked about the book we had brought and what we had been drawn to in our respective picks. it was a huge indicator that we’re the right gals for a book club, because each of us were interested in every book that was brought to the table (literally).

after we had each shared our book and after all the food had been eaten, we decided what book each member of the group would go home with. and then we talked more about books. obviously.

our first book we read together, it was decided, will be ‘A Love Song for Ricky Wilde’ by Tia Williams. i’ll be sure to keep you updated on my thoughts and what goes on at the next book club get-together.

books discussed:

  • Tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow, by Gabrielle Zevin (Emma T’s pick)
  • The night circus, by Erin Morgenstern (Leah’s pick)
  • Everyone in my family has killed someone, by Benjamin Stevenson (Emma L’s pick)
  • The maid, by Nita Prose (Charlie’s pick)

the menu:

  • Char Siu pork bao buns
  • Gochugang glazed eggplant
  • Spicy salmon crispy rice bites
  • Crispy rice and cucumber salad
  • Carrot cake cheesecake

i am the happiest gal in the world that it went so well, and i can’t wait for many more editions of the social book club (irl) !

lots of love and happy reading,

Emma Xx
